Regulatory Status

Research compound

In Plain English

Stimulates the brain to grow new neurons and form new connections by boosting BDNF. Derived from CNTF but without its inflammatory side effects. Research focused on Down syndrome cognition — preliminary results suggest memory benefits.

Overview

P21 is a small peptide derived from ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) that maintains neurotrophic benefits while avoiding the inflammatory side effects of full CNTF. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases BDNF levels, promoting neurogenesis particularly in the hippocampus. Research suggests benefits for learning, memory, and potentially treatment of neurodegenerative conditions. Studied for effects on trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) cognition, hence the name.

Common Formats

  • Injectable (subcutaneous)
  • Intranasal

Storage Notes
